The Year 1998

April 22, 1998 things going on in this town.
There’s this new band called I Told Her Everything that is three young handsome guys playing heavy electronic music. I saw them at the House of Commons Coop on April 4th. They have an amped upright bass, lots of drum mxs and guitar pedals, lots of singing, they sound kinda fucked up if you catch my drift, very computer gameish, lots of weird sounds. Also that night wasThee Flood of Red aka Jason Reece from Trail of Dead. He played there and then later that night did it again at Emo’s. I missed both sets but I heard that he was great, like a flaming acrobat on a loose wire.

On the 11th, Los Despienados played at Spider House Cafe. That’s Marshall Gause from Cordial and Katja Kohler of The Gossips(sorry, I can’t remember their real name which is in spanish – Chismosos?) and playing with them was Juan Ramos and George Lara from Glorium on rythm. Knife in the Water played after them. At Emo’s that night The Search Party played an intense short set of mayhem only to be cut off by the soundman who was shot by Nikki Holiday. Holiday escaped into the night and returned to finish the show with the other primas. He wasn’t arrested. Viddi Vitties played in the middle like mustard on a tomatoe sandwich.

What else? then on April 12th there was this show at this little house next to a little park. lots of little people got in front of a little audience and did little things. this guy Ead played some songs, and this girl Lauren played too. they were both very talented and promising future pop stars. Stephanie confused us with a story of sleep spasms, and later played some whispery figure 8 style melodies with Jeff Hunt on accompanying stringed instrument. it might have been a bass. They’re called Raretan Bay and Bart Exposito plays with them. Amy read a short story, Conrad played some covers, Beau had a slide show…. Nikki Holiday and Kristen Schilt. of Night Vandals played a more rocking loud set that changed the mood of the night from intimate sharing to full on house party. After that Paul Streckfus played solo a few songs and then Sarah Carlson did a coupla Dylan Covers. There was this heavy improv band with members Jeremy Rueter, Chris Lyons, Kelly, Rebecca and others that brought back the spirit of spontaneity to the event and the whole thing ended with a huge car crash as Friendly Thomas‘ Cutlass decided to smash itself into an unexpected parked vehicle at the bottom of the hill. And who can forget the magic tricks by Bridgett?

Last night there was a performance art thing at Spider House…did anyone go that wants to write in about it? And who is spray painting obsceneties all over this town?

So Windsor for the Derby have played their last show up in Dallas on Apr 11th. They had a rough time getting to the gig when Eric’s car quit. Luckily they hitched a ride to the gig, but only to find that their dressing room was a closet, and that there was a rotten orange in there for Jason to throw against a wall. This dude named Peter Schmidt or something fucked up the band order and refused to go first, thusly stealing Windsor’s crowd who showed up later to catch them at the advertised time. “I’ve had it with rock-n-roll” says McNeely. “I’m too old for this bullshit.” Peter S. failed to amuse anyone with his prerecorded band, and WFTD opened with a really small crowd. But the night before at Liberty Lunch, when they played with Bedhead, they really stole the show.

March 3, 1998

The Prima Donnas left for their tour 3 days ago. This was a joyous occasion for many fans. They also have a 45 record released on local label called Peekaboo Records.

Also the Trail of Dead is going to tour in April. That is what I’ve heard. They are recording again soon for an ep on Trance.

Bunny Stockhausen is the best band. Lissen to this much…on March 20 at The Blue Flamingo there will be good bands. These bands are Cyrus Rego, that blonde guy from Paul Newman who plays weird noisy ambient electronic stuff, Eddie RobertThe Softs, who love to be hugged, Fun Machine, which sometimes sounds like Kraftwerk and/or Stereolab, Jason Reece, that circus monkey in a human’s costume, and The Shape, which caused a huge riot last week at the Ecomat. So you better go to this show if you want good times.

On March 19, bands at 33 degrees include Crack Pipes, Knife in the Water, Leshii Auld Clootie and The Search Party

New RARE tape releases from Golden Hour this month are The Search Party (4 different ones), Antarctica, Silver Apples: live at Electric Lounge 1/31/98, Drums and Tuba: live at Hole in Wall, Gut: live in Texas, Cyrus Rego and Fire Island bootleg(only two in existence), Crack Pipes and maybe a short run of the newest Glorium stuff on cd.

Actually they’re finishing their album at a studio in town. The new trio with Carlson drms will become a new band overnight, realized their powers at age thirteen and mutate into the avenging angel of truth with sheild called love.
