...Trail of Dead by Paul Streckfus

7/28/95
Here's a recording of Trail of Dead from 7/95, when the group was just Conrad and Jason. It was recorded at a house show they played in west campus with Glorium. This was released on the Austin Live Houses cassette compilation in 1995, GHR 08.

Trail of Dead also appeared on the Capitol City Signals comp, GHR 20, and released a 4 song cassette, GHR 12.

Conrad Keely
Jason Reece

When Trail of Dead first performed in Austin on Congress St., the lineup was Conrad Keely and Jason Reece.

Later they added Deanne Rowley for one or two shows, and then Kevin Allen as a second guitarist, and then Neil Busch on bass. For awhile different folks joined them on stage, working a four track packed with samples, or extra instrumentation. Denver Smith of Wizard Town infamy, Nikki Holiday from Prima Donnas, and Jason McNeely all joined them at different one or two off shows, around the time of their first album on Trance.

2/15/97
Originally released on GHR 20 Capitol City Signals cassette
Michael Gerner, Chris Hodge, Kenny Hopper, Sean McFalls

100 Watt Clock formed around 95/96. Chris and Mike are from Copperas Cove and have been in many bands together over the years. Chris was in Kid's Meal, and both were in Minority before they formed Carbomb in 1994. Sean McFalls was also in The Satans. Kenny Hopper eventually moved to San Francisco, where he played with Crime In Choir.

The group released an LP on Buddy System Records in August of 1996. You can download it from another site here.

At one show, I think at Pato's Tacos, John Monge of The Brownie Points and Keith Anderson from Gut played with 100 Watt Clock. But that lineup was short lived.

Like most Austin bands, 100 WC was short lived, and soon they started something else — Tune In Tokyo.

10196
1995 Originally released on GHR 16, the set from that night on one side, and stuff from their studio sessions on the other side. Both sessions were recorded live with one mic. Jason McNeely, Chris Goyer, Paul Streckfus, John Monge, Conrad Keely, Jason Reece

This band got together to write some songs and play one show on New Year's Eve, 1996.

They met downtown on an E 5th St. practice space for a few weeks working up a set. At the time, it felt like the mixing of four styles of songwriting into a blender. That blender was your ears. The concoction, was poison.

The Andromeda Strain was playing around Austin in 1993 - 1996. They recorded a 7" at Sweat Box Fall of 1993 which came out on 6" Doylie Records. You might be lucky to come across one in the used bins.

They broke up in 1996, and Neil began playing with ...Trail of Dead, Eddie began playing with Paul Newman, and Steven played drums in Sixteen Deluxe.

antarctica

1995
Originally released on GHR 08 Austin Live Houses cassette
Paul Streckfus, Linus Streckfus, Ernest Salaz

Antarctica formed in 1995 to play at The Alter Ego Party, thrown by photographer and scientist, Stacy Thompson.
Linus, Paul and Ernest from Glorium switched instruments. Ernest played drums, Paul played guitar, and Linus played bass.
This new arrangement threw them into the unknown, where freedom was embraced.
They recorded a ton of stuff, and released 2 tapes on Golden Hour, GHR 10 and GHR 37. They also appear on the Austin Live Houses tape comp, GHR 08.

They played their last show in 1998 at a party, joined by Malcom Hamilton on keys. That show is GHR 37.

"Fucking Excellent band that never gets the appreciation that they deserve. A but like N.O.U., this band is so full of energy that I nearly shit my work pants. Futuristic, punk rock in its newest form, their split cassette with Brick blows me away. I hope they play out more cause I can't get enough. I'm so glad Texas is their home. Angular, dissonant, wildly executed with a great rythmic sense. Be glad these guys exist so get off your ass and invite them to play at your house."

1997 Originally released on GHR 22 SIx 4-Track Solos cassette* The Crack Pipes, the gogo kings of the new r and b, punk fusion hi-octane rockers fueled by bootleg booze and teen jesus puberty(post and modern) sick with a new blues fever! but more than that the three INDIVIDUALS that form the crack pipes also have many varied interest and musical backgrounds. when the crack pipes are not practicing they are lugubrious over separation from creating music. each one creates reel after reel of 4-track demos to be brought to the next session or meeting. over the years a huge back inventory of solo spngs have been created; some not so suitable for, or not in the style of the crack pipes sound. This project is for you - the Crack Pipes fan - here is a glimpse into the singular identity of each crack pipe. 2 songs recorded on 4 track by only one crackpipe have been compiled to form this special 6 song EP. These are solo projects that reflect the special quality of each crackpipe, the interest and musical ideas that don't always make it into a crackpipes masterpiece. You the fan have the opportunity to peer into the very soul of your favorite rock-n-Roll band!! - Enjoy, Baron Von Rock.

Crowbar by Rosemary Ramos
    1990-1990

Carlos Hernandez
Raul Reyes
Ernest Salaz
Paul Streckfus

with:
Milo Misut - bass
Malcom Hamilton - keys
Clint McCown - guitar
Jason Cotrell
Linus Streckfus - saxophone

Crowbar formed in San Antonio in 1990. The group would get together as often as possible and record improvised music at home studios. Musically the group was heavily influenced by Crass, The Fall, Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, and Psychic TV. A handful of gigs occurred at DMZ, The Needle Diet, Alfred's and a few house parties. The group split up summer of 1990.

Paul, Linus and Ernest went on to play in Glorium. Malcom played in The Search Party and The Shape.

Milo Misut passed away in 1992.
Rest in peace, Milo.

The set included someone getting a haircut. The musicians here were Barry, Tony, and Aaron.

When johnboy broke up in 1993, Barry Stone and Tony Bise recruited Paul Stautinger, Aaron Winslow, and David Jones to work on music as Desafinado. They recorded a split 7" on Trance with Windsor For The Derby and worked on recording for a full length, but I don't think that ever was released.

Fire Island was a solo project from Jon Rueter, or sometimes known as Nikki Holiday, who played in Prima Donnas, New Girl Art Trend Band, Rock Hudsons before moving to San Francisco. His live performances were here and there, not very often, but one show at Spider House was recorded for Golden Hour Records. It was released as a split cassette with Cyrus Rego, which was a solo project from Eddie Robert. This cassette is referred to as a bootleg, as no permission was granted to produce the split cassette, but an arrangement was agreed upon for a song from each to be on the Capitol City Signals compilation tape, GHR 20.

August was also in Crown Roast, Big Horny Hustler, and Filipino Wife, later went on to sing for Society of Friends. Geordie was also in Big Horny Hustler. Originally released on GHR 08 Austin Live Houses cassette

Their first release was on Golden Hour Records on the Austin Live Houses tape compilation. Soon after was followed a full length cassette release called A Certain Sacrifice as GHR 05. The band's live shows were always a mixture of surreal stage settings and guerilla style art actions. They played their last show in summer of 1995, The Cellophane Show, and then formed Rock Hudsons.

Sarah Carlson - vocals
Becky Cortez - bass
Joey Caperton - drums
Jon Rueter - guitar
Kristen Schilt - vocals

The first semblance of the New Girl Art Trend Band formed in 1995 to participate in the L'Austin Space Collective Battle of the Bands happening. Denver Smith was involved as a drummer but then switched to singing. Jon was on guitar but then switched to drums. It was sort of a free for all. Joey was singing on roller skates. At this point Kristin and Sarah were not actively a part of it. Later, with Sarah Carlson and Kristen Schilt singing, Becky Cortez on bass, Joey Caperton on drums, and Jon Rueter on guitar, the group began writing songs.

According to Jon, his vision of the band was "an artier version of Brick that had gays and girls in it and wasn't this macho hardcore band but still had these micro songs that were under a minute". The name was chosen as a reaction to the male dominated music scene in Austin at the time. Sarah moved down in August or September that year and joined the group.

The Search Party by Richard Mcintosh

11/29/97
Recorded at 2105 Comal St.
Paul Streckfus - guitars
Lauren Robertson - drums
Malcom Hamilton - synthesizers

Sarah Carlson - second drummer

The Search Party formed to expore the musical connections between Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, The Fall, Neu!, Can, Throbbing Gristle, Leather Nun, and Suicide.

Their first show was Nov. 18, 1997 at Bates Motel, 311 E. 6th St. The Bates Motel was not even around one year. They played a few shows in Austin with Lauren on drums, recorded an EP at Sweatbox, and then Lauren moved away to D.C. Then Sarah Carlson, then of Rock Hudsons, took over drums and they played at 33 Degrees for an anti-SXSW gig in 1998. Hey! Lee Ranaldo was there!

After Search Party ended its run in Austin, Paul and Lauren played two shows in Washington D.C. under the Search Party name, before breaking up for good. some final mixing of Sweat Box recordings were mixed down in Providence, RI by Ernest Salaz but those final mixes had phasing problems and so they were never released. John Croslin recorded a few songs on the east side, and those were not released either.

Lauren went on to play in The Long Goodbye, Thunder Claw, and Ascended Master in San Francisco. Paul went on to play in Kingdom of Suicide Lovers.

Yellow Fledgling

Yellow Fledgling at Comal House, by Paul Streckfus

Sarah Carlson - Guitar, voice
Amanda Stein - bass, voice
Lauren Robertson - drums, voice

Previous members:
Jeff Hunt - drums
Nikki Holiday - drums

After New Girl Art Trend Band split up, Sarah Carlson formed Yellow Fledgling with Amanda Stein and went through a few drummers, Lauren Robertson, Jeff Hunt and Nikki Holiday aka Jon Rueter. There were very unique in the Austin underground scene. A good description of it might be Fragile Rock. After Yellow Fledgling, Sarah went on to be in Rock Hudsons, and then played drums for The Search Party.

They recorded a ton of material with Linus Streckfus in 1997, and I don't believe it was ever released. It would be terrific to hear those tracks sometime.

One track he recorded appeared on the Capitol City Signals comp, GHR 20. This one here is not that one.
